⭐Project background

Ipswich has a proud sporting heritage supported by a vibrant network of more than 300 clubs and organisations. These groups participate in over 40 different sports across 60 locations, collectively providing more than 220 sport and recreation facilities.

Council is committed to fostering community participation in sport and recreation by focusing on the following three key pillars:

To uphold this commitment, we need to understand how people participate, what motivates them and what barriers they face. With 200,000 new residents expected over the next decade, demand for land, infrastructure and community facilities will continue to rise. Smart, future‑focused planning now will ensure Ipswich can continue delivering high‑quality, accessible sport and recreation opportunities for everyone.

To plan for a healthier, more active Ipswich, council needs to understand:

  • how the community currently participates in sport, physical activity and nature-based recreation
  • the barriers that prevent people from being physically active
  • emerging trends and changing needs
  • what facilities, programs and spaces best support a healthy and active Ipswich
