Project background

Ipswich City Council is seeking community feedback on whether the Nicholas Street Precinct Carpark should retain its current name or be renamed to “Tulmur Place Carpark”.

The carpark was named Nicholas Street Precinct Carpark when it opened in 2021, which reflects its location within the broader redeveloped Nicholas Street Precinct. Tulmur Place, the civic square above the carpark, is one of the key public spaces within the Precinct.

Over the past five years, Council has spent money on the promotion and communication of the Nicholas Street Precinct Carpark to the community. The carpark is physically named and signed as the Nicholas Street Precinct carpark throughout the Precinct as well as the main vehicular entrance from Bremer Street. The carpark is digitally named and recognised on multiple websites and apps for both marketing and social media awareness, as well as wayfinding mapping tools like Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze.

In February 2026, a Councillor brought forward a Notice of Motion to change the name of the carpark to Tulmur Place Carpark to align the carpark name with the civic space above it and support clearer wayfinding for the community and visitors.

Council has requested that appropriate consultation, including with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, take place before a decision is made. This feedback will help Council understand how the community uses the carpark, whether there is support for a change, noting that there will be direct and indirect costs arising from any change to signage, websites and apps, and any considerations that should be taken into account as part of the review.

We invite you to have your say before 8 April 2026.
