Community engagement now closed – thank you for your feedback

Ipswich City Council thanks everyone who took the time to provide feedback on whether the Nicholas Street Precinct Carpark should retain its current name or be renamed 'Tulmur Place Carpark'.

The Nicholas Street Precinct Carpark was named when it opened in 2021, reflecting its location within the broader redeveloped Nicholas Street Precinct. Tulmur Place, the civic square located above the carpark, is one of the key public spaces within the precinct.

Over the past five years, council has spent money on the promotion and communication of the Nicholas Street Precinct Carpark to the community. The carpark is physically named and signed as the Nicholas Street Precinct carpark throughout the Precinct as well as the main vehicular entrance from Bremer Street. The carpark is digitally named and recognised on multiple websites and apps for both marketing and social media awareness, as well as wayfinding mapping tools like Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze.

In February 2026, a councillor brought forward a Notice of Motion to change the name of the carpark to 'Tulmur Place Carpark' to align the carpark name with the civic space above it and support clearer wayfinding for the community and visitors.

Initial consultation has been undertaken with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to confirm the proposed name change is considered culturally appropriate and is supported by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. See a summary of the engagement findings here.

Council then sought feedback from the broader community and local businesses to understand how the carpark is used, levels of support for a potential name change, and any considerations related to the direct and indirect costs associated with changes to signage, websites and apps.

The engagement period has now closed. Council sincerely appreciates the time and insights shared by residents, businesses and community members who contributed their views. All feedback received will be reviewed and considered as part of council’s next steps and decision‑making process.
