Background

The Ipswich Civic Centre has been the anchor for the city's cultural, civic and community life for over 50 years. As Ipswich's premier performing arts and event venue, it has hosted generations of residents and visitors through theatre productions, music performances, conferences, eisteddfods, graduations, citizenship ceremonies and cultural events.

As Ipswich continues to grow, there is an opportunity to ensure the venue can better support the diverse needs of performers, community groups, audiences and event organisers.

In 2023 a business case identified a market opportunity for a new flexible black box theatre capable of seating approximately 250–300 patrons. This type of venue would complement the existing George Hogg Auditorium by providing a more affordable and fit-for-purpose space for family shows, community productions, emerging artists, small-to-medium touring productions and contemporary performances that do not require a large traditional theatre setting. The space would also offer new additional function spaces, rehearsal spaces and improved accessibility.

Funding secured through the Australian Government's Urban Precincts and Partnerships Program has enabled council to progress to concept development for an expansion which aligns with the outcome sought from the broader Ipswich Central Heart project.

You now have an opportunity to have your say on the design direction of the expansion of the Ipswich Art Gallery.

The concept design has been informed by a range of insights and operational experiences, including:

  • A business case developed in 2023 to understand the market opportunities for the addition of a Blackbox Theatre to the existing facility,
  • Information gathered through audience surveys and feedback received through daily venue operations,
  • Feedback from performers, musicians, producers and venue hirers,
  • Representatives from other performing venues including the Empire Theatre and the Tivoli Group,
  • The professional experience and operational knowledge of the Ipswich Civic Centre Team.
