The Character Residential Zone provides for:

2. community uses, small-scale services, facilities and infrastructure to support local residents

Provides for community-related uses, activities and facilities, whether publicly or privately owned, for example:

1. educational establishments
2. hospitals
3. transport and telecommunication networks
4. utility installations

Provides for the protection, restoration and management of:

1. areas supporting significant biological diversity and ecological functions
2. wildlife corridors and habitat connectivity
3. areas of natural scenic amenity value
4. areas to the general exclusion of further development

Ensures that development is consistent with the identified role and function of District Centres within the Ipswich Centres Hierarchy.

It provides for a large variety of uses and activities for example, administrative, business, community, cultural, entertainment, professional, residential or retail uses or activities.

Provides for land for urban purposes in accordance with detailed structure planning to meet projected future growth of existing and new communities.

Protects environmentally sensitive land that:

1. supports the natural environment and ecological processes
2. provides a buffer between incompatible land uses
3. supports waterway corridor and overland flow functions
4. acts as wildlife corridors and provides habitat connectivity

Provides for:

1. high density multiple dwellings
2. community uses, small-scale services, facilities and infrastructure to support local residents

Examples include home based businesses, food and drink outlets and residential care facility.

Provides for the efficient masterplanning and eventual development of viable land for industrial purposes.

Identifies land that is significantly affected by 1 or more development constraints, for example, constraints relating to defence requirements, flooding, historical subdivisions, land contamination, past or future mining activities or topography.

Ensures that development is consistent with the identified role and function of Local Centres within the Ipswich Centres Hierarchy.

It provides for a large variety of commercial, community and retail activities to service local residents and other uses and activities that integrate with, and enhance, the Local Centre including, for example, entertainment, shopping or residential uses

1. provides the highest-order employment and services of regional significance including professional, health care, education, cultural and recreational services
2. provides high-order comparison and convenience retail, hospitality functions and cultural and entertainment facilities

Provides for a variety of cultural, educational, leisure, recreation and sporting uses and activities, including, but not limited to:

1. parks, playgrounds or playing fields for the use of residents and visitors
2. parks, or other areas, for the conservation of natural areas
3. facilities and infrastructure

Accommodates traditional and innovative rural uses and activities including nature-based tourism and short-term accommodation uses, while preserving and enhancing the region’s ecological systems and natural resources.

Facilitates the on-going operation of public utilities and infrastructure.

Provides for 1 or more specialised uses including conference centres, entertainment centres, education and research facilities or university campuses.

Locally, we want to protect and enhance specialised centres as a knowledge, technology and entertainment precinct supporting a concentration of significant tertiary education and employment activities at the University, and major entertainment and exhibition activities at the Ipswich Showgrounds.

Provides for:

1. short-term accommodation
2. community uses, small-scale services, facilities and infrastructure to support local residents

Provides for the continued operation of existing tourist attractions and facilities, and new or expanding tourism development that makes a positive contribution to the City.

Accommodates a collection of uses servicing local residents and tourists which together could constitute a traditional rural-oriented service centre, including residential, centre and service or light industry uses, along with supporting community facilities, parks and open spaces.
