Background

Stone Quarry is a historic cemetery, first opening in 1875. It is located at 207 Stone Quarry Road, Jeebropilly. The cemetery is significant for its:

  • connection to local community and local families
  • association with early settlement of the area
  • cultural value of the many monuments

The cemetery currently has several separate burial areas for different Christian denominations.

In March 2023, leaders of the Islamic community approached council about creating a burial area for people of Islamic faith in Ipswich. At that time, there were no cemeteries in Ipswich suitable for people of Islamic faith. To fix this, investigations began to find a suitable location. This work has identified Stone Quarry Cemetery as the most suitable location, and work is underway to incorporate an Islamic faith burial area into the cemetery.

As part of this work, council is planning to improve the look and accessibility of the cemetery. This would support future growth, while protecting the heritage of the site. To help with this, we asked for your feedback on the proposed design.

Thank you to everyone who shared their feedback. A summary of what you shared can be seen below. Council will use your feedback to shape the final design of the cemetery which will be developed over time. Once the final design has been approved by Council it will be shared with the community.

In the meantime, works are commencing to develop a new burial area and improve the facilities at the site such as amenities and disability access pathways. See the image below for further details.
