Ipswich Heritage Program

We want to ensure the heritage of our city is retained for future generations.

We can do that by including character protection in the city's planning scheme but we also want to hear from our community about places they think have character and heritage value to the city.

Project background

What is heritage?

Heritage is what is passed to future generations.

Cultural heritage are things like customs, practices, places, objects, artistic expressions and values or anything that is an expression of the way we live.

It can be something we can see like a monument, object or place or part of our culture like our inherited traditions, contemporary activities, meanings and behaviours we draw from something.

We as people are shaped by our heritage, but heritage also shapes the character and identity of Ipswich. It is woven into our natural, built and cultural environments and helps to make Ipswich a great place to live and visit.

The heritage of Ipswich:

Showcases who we are providing a sense of belonging and identity
Remembers our past people, events, eras and traditions
Connects us with our past to share and revive traditions together
Highlights who we are as a community and as a city

As a city, we want to acknowledge and appreciate our heritage. To do this, we can promote our unique heritage to others, visit our heritage places, protect our special sites and traditions and celebrate our heritage.

As we develop a new planning scheme, we continue to identify places of cultural heritage in Ipswich and encourage their conservation.
