What you shared

The community was asked to provide feedback on how Ipswich City Council can improve resource recovery across the city. See a summary of what you shared with us below, or read the Community Engagement Report.

Who participated

Demographic data was captured as part of engagement activities to understand the diversity of respondents. See a breakdown below.

What you shared

  • Awareness

Overall, advertising efforts were seen by approximately 75% of respondents, most commonly through online/social media channels (51%).

  • Knowledge

96% stated they placed recyclable waste straight into the recycling bin with no bagging and 9% bagged in a paper bag, indicating strong community awareness on appropriate recycling practices to avoid contamination. It is noted however, 12% still believed plastic bags are accepted in recycling bins.

  • Education

Feedback throughout the survey indicated support for further education. The most popular request was for bin stickers, although other resources were welcomed. Comments also suggested some form of reward system may provide further motivation for behavioural change.

  • Impact

While sentiment remained similar across phase 1 and 2, there were incremental shifts noted in the awareness and usage of the following resource recovery solutions:

    • Usage of battery collection bins and charity and second-hand stores or donation bins increased
    • Improved awareness of ink cartridge recycling, paint and packaging collection points, and free disposal of e-waste, whitegoods, print and co-mingle recyclables at Ipswich resource recovery centres.
