Project background

Council’s municipal solid waste (MSW) recycling rate currently tracks at 34%, well below the recycling target of 50% by 2025. Improving our recovery rates in our yellow-lid recycling bins will improve this performance. Additionally, many recyclable items are being lost to landfill through the red-lid general waste bins. There is an urgent need for council to improve yellow-lid recycling to work towards the targets, in line with the Resource Recovery Strategy.

Council is participating in the state government's Let's Get It Sorted initiative to support waste reduction, improve recycling and implement behaviour change interventions in order to improve kerbside recycling collection services.

We have now gathered feedback from the community to understand public perspectives and drivers behind waste and resource recovery behaviours. These insights will help us continue to improve our services and become a more sustainable and liveable city.
