Background

Putting the right pedestrian and cycle facilities in place across Ipswich is an essential part of building liveable and sustainable communities. The first theme of Council's 2026-2031 Corporate Plan, Vibrant and Growing, sets out council's commitment to providing an accessible and well-connected active and public transport system that serves growth areas and links key centres.

Funding secured through the Australian Government's urban Precincts and Partnerships Program (uPPP) has enabled Council to progress the concept development and fund the detailed design for Stages 1 and 2 of the Ipswich City Centre Bikeway (previously known as the Ipswich Inner CBD Cycle Network), ensuring it connects to and integrates with other Ipswich Central Heart projects.

The bikeway concept designs have been informed by previous studies and community engagement undertaken in March 2022. To explore the feedback received, visit the Previous Engagement tab. There you can learn more about the Ipswich City Centre Bikeway, how it connects to the Ipswich Central Cycle Network and how it has been considered as part of the broader Ipswich Central revitilisation and Ipswich Central Heart projects.

Key features and benefits of the Stage 1 and 2 Ipswich City Centre Bikeway concept design include:

  • Physical separation of bike riders from vehicles for the majority of the corridor
  • Safer intersections and road crossing locations for bike riders and pedestrians
  • Improved pedestrian footpaths
  • Improved urban greening/ shade outcomes along the corridor
